I really wanted to do a ladybug craft.  I wanted it to be round, spherical,  and I didn’t want to spend a fortune on supplies either…

Super Cute Lady Bug Kids' Craft made of recycled egg cartons

I thought of painting rocks, and I thought of making a giant paper mache ladybug – which we still might do, but not this month! We were about to settle for construction paper loops… and then, I finally got to clearing some of the debris of the kitchen counter, and voila!  An egg carton.  The rest is history.

Egg Carton Ladybugs

Materials

  • Egg Carton
  • Red Tempra Paint
  • Felt (little wee bits of black and white cut into circles)
  • White glue
  • Paint brushes, old t-shirts and a fitted sheet for the table

So, I cut up the egg carton into 12 different cups, got out some paint, some felt for spots, and for eyes. We were all out of googly eyes – but I am always pleased to use what we have on hand.  We whipped up some glue, covered the table with an old single size fitted sheet, and got out the old t-shirts (now smocks).
To make the eyes, I cut out white circles of felt, and smaller black circles of felt, and glued the black onto the white. To make the spots, I cut out a lot of little black circles of felt.

Directions

  1. Separate the egg carton into individual cups.  Paint the egg carton cups with red paint.
  2. Glue the felt spots on.
  3. Glue the eyes on.  If you have googly eyes, go ahead and use them!
  4. Add pipe cleaner antennae if you so desire.

There is a lot of potential for imaginary play as well, once you have 12 ladybugs, ready for a picnic. (think Sesame Street….)
