Earth Day Up Cycles

Hand Knit Rag Rug – by Nemcsok Farms

This upcycle was truly one of the most interesting projects I have taken on so far.  You can create your own also – just find an old bedsheet, and follow along with the tutorial.

Globe Upcycle – by My Sister’s Suitcase

I have to say, I prefer a globe that looks like a globe.  Now that that is out of the way – this is a great way to decorate a thrift store or garage sale find of a damaged globe.  Plus – the way this one is done, is very earth day appealing.

Bottle Cap Flower – by Crafts by Amanda

How many of us fidget relentlessly with the bottle caps that come off the tops of our beverages?  Doesn’t this piece of garden art just give you total piece of mind?

Owl Craft Project – by Empress of Dirt

A stunning way to upcycle cardboard!  Anything owl-y automatically ranks as a fave around here – add an up cycle to the mix, and I’m totally sold!

Earth Day DIYs

DIY Tooth Brush Holder – by Shaken Together Life

Eliminate the toothbrush pileup that can result from a busy household!  Also, the theme of the toothbrush holder adds a gentle reminder to be mindful of the water waste at the sink!

Recycle Bin Labels – by Lia Griffith

Lovely, practical and printable.  A wonderful way to add a little character and a lot of style to your rubbish and recycling bins!

Cottage Chic Herb Garden – by the Gardening Cook

You really can’t go wrong with a DIY herb garden – and this one is cottage chic done in mason jars.  Keep your favourite fresh herbs at the ready, and make Mother Nature proud.

Earth Day Crafts

Globe Garland – by Poppy Talk

Origami projects are always a fun way to craft the day away, and when you can put this super fun earth day spin on it – well I am all for it!

Glass Globe Terrarium – by Stephanie Lynn

Not only perfect for Earth Day – these would also make pretty awesome DIY gifts for pretty much any person, and for any occasion.

Book Page Wreath – by the Gunny Sack

Stop. The. Press. I can not with any level of sincerity and good conscience suggest or support doing this to a book – but I can and wholly suggest doing it with other paper you can recycle – such as newspaper or old magazines.

Homemade Ice Cream with Easter Candy

Homemade Ice Cream made with Easter Candy -

Homemade ice cream is pretty awesome, right?  Throw in some Easter candy and you’ve got a little treat perfect for springtime celebrations!

(this post contains affiliate links for your convenience)

A super tasty homemade ice cream with just the right amount of chocolate candy goodness. Perfect for Easter and all other Spring Celebrations!

Homemade Ice Cream

You’ll need an ice cream maker for this one – and I have been very happy with using the Ice Cream Maker attachment for our Stand Mixer for all of the ice cream we make here, and I feel pretty good about recommending it to you if you’re in the market.  Keep your ice cream maker stored in the freezer if you have the space – otherwise, be sure to freeze it before using it to make ice cream.

For this recipe, I used a cup and a half of those wonderful little pastel coloured M&M candies you see all over the stores this time of year – and it has turned out so well!  A super tasty vanilla ice cream with just the right amount of chocolate candy goodness.
Homemade Ice Cream made with Easter Candy -

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups 10% cream
  • 8 egg yolks ( save the whites for Angel Food Cake!)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups 35% cream
  • 4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 cups M&M candies – we used the pastel coloured Easter variety

Directions

  1. Cook the 10% cream on the stove top until it’s hot.  Not boiling, but hot.
  2. Whip the yolks and sugar until blended, and gradually stir in the hot 10% cream, and continue to mix until blended.
  3. Transfer the yolk mixture back to a medium sauce pan, and again cook until hot.  Cook until it is steaming, and small bubbles start to form, but do not boil.  Stir continuously and prevent scorching.
  4. Add in the 35% cream, the vanilla extract and the salt, and chill for 8 hours ( or overnight)
  5. Following the directions on your ice cream maker, add your ice cream to the ice cream maker and let mix for about 18 minutes – add the M&M candies and mix 2 minutes longer.
  6. Serve and enjoy, and be sure to freeze the remaining ice cream!

Muffin Mania

It’s pretty hard to go wrong with a muffin.  From stick to your rib heartiness, to sweet chocolaty treats – muffins are pretty much where it’s at.  I like to experiment with the fruit we have on hand, and a cup of berries that are past their prime are going to go further in a small batch of muffins than on their own.

Use fresh picked, frozen, farmer’s market or grocery store purchased berries for these – whatever works for you.

Raspberry Muffins with Vanilla Sugar

Ingredients:

  • I cup flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup vanilla sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup raspeberries

Note: Make 1/2 cup vanilla sugar by mixing 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

DIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath Tutorial

DIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath

A fun and easy way to spruce up your front door this Halloween – try this DIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath.

For your convenience this post contains affiliate links ( where to get the stuff )

DIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath

I like to keep the Halloween decor a little more fun and friendly, and a little shy of creepy.  Maybe that will change as I mature, grow up and get older – but until then, it’s happy Jack O’Lanterns and cookie monsters for me.

DIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath Tutorial

Materials:

Directions:

Before we get started, I wanted to share photos of the steps along the way.  The photos I am sharing are from a ribbon wreath I made for a baby shower door prize – so the ribbon is not the same, but the method is.  Also, the photos are old, were taken in not so great light, but get the point across.

  1. Cut a piece of elastic cord, 5 – 8 inches long
  2. Secure that cord around the wreath formDIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath Attaching the Elastic Cord
  3. Wrap the wreath with the tulle or wide ribbon, overlapping as you go, so that you cover all of the white spaceDIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath Wrapping the Wreath in Tulle or Wide Ribbon
  4. Be sure to secure your elastic cord while wrapping, but leave the top of the elastic cord loop free ( this is how you will hang your wreathDIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath Wrapping the Wreath in Tulle or Wide Ribbon
  5. Cut your ribbon to 3 inch lengthsDIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath Cut the Ribbon into lengths for making loops
  6. Fold ribbon into loops, and secure the loops to the wreath form with pinsDIY Halloween Ribbon Wreath Loops of Ribbon being secured with straight pins
  7. Pin the loops to the wreath in a random order, or a pattern, depending on your preference.  Fill in all the gaps with ribbon loops. Be sure to cover the front, inside of the circle and outside of the circle, but not the back of the circle.  Leaving the back free of loops will allow your wreath to site nice and flat against your door

Happy Halloween

Reasons to love Rhubarb

Rhubarb has a taste that is quite unique. It is perfect for muffins, breads and cakes, as it is not too sweet.  You will find that a lot of recipes using rhubarb also add strawberries.  They go quite well together!

Besides these amazing rhubarb recipes, Rhubarb is a hardy, perennial vegetable, that requires very little care and maintenance.  Try to cut it before it goes to seed, and don’t cut the really small pieces when you do harvest.

Even in the Northern Ontario climates, you can get at least two, and often three harvests per year.  That is usually enough to stock a freezer. Rhubarb freezes well, it also cans well.  You can mix it with sugar and can it, and use it later on in crumbles, crisps and my favourite cobbler recipe.

Mini Muffin Recipe made with fresh rhubarb and topped with cinnamon sugar make a great snack, and are super tasty!

Rhubarb Mini Muffins

Rhubarb is one of the easiest vegetables to grow ever.  It made my list of 7 Easy to grow Veggies, and I told you a little bit about caring for the plant during Rhubarb Season.

What I may not have mentioned yet, is that you can quite a lot of rhubarb from one plant, and with rhubarb a little goes a long way.  You can freeze rhubarb to keep it for baking through the winter, and you can also can it it many ways; as a syrup, a jam, and a sauce.

These tasty sweet little muffins are a favourite here, and the the crumbly sugary top is tasty enough for a light dessert, and satisfying enough for a great snack.  They are also wonderful with coffee at breakfast.  And you’re wondering about that problem I mentioned earlier?  Well, I eat them like potato chips.
